Nauru
The South Pacific island of Nauru announced on Monday that it would sever diplomatic relations with Taiwan. Instead, Nauru wants to recognise Taiwan as Chinese territory. Nauru will become the first nation to have diplomatic relations with Taiwan in the past to do so following the Taiwanese elections this weekend. Here, the China-critical Lai Ching-te of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) was elected as Taiwan’s next president. Following Nauru’s announcement, 12 nations recognise Taiwan as independent. In a press release, the government in Nauru says it will no longer recognize Taiwan “as a separate country” but “as an inalienable part of China’s territory”. /ritzau/
