Niger
The Niger coup plotters’ proposal to restore democracy in Niger in three years is ‘a joke’, according to a commissioner of the West African organisation ECOWAS on Monday, AFP has reported. “We want constitutional order restored as soon as possible,” said ECOWAS Commissioner for Policy and Security Abdel-Fatau Musah. It was on July 26th. that the now captured president, Mohamed Bazoum, was forced from power in a coup in which the country’s National Guard proclaimed that it had taken power.
Junta Spokesman General Abdourahmane Tiani has since suggested starting a national dialogue on restoring democracy, which “should not last longer than three years,” Reuters reported. But ECOWAS Commissioner Abdel-Fatau Musah said the announcement must be “a joke”. He says the West African organisation “will never accept it”. “Military intervention is not off the table,” he told Al Jazeera according to AFP. /ritzau/
