Norway – Mali

Norway will close its embassy in Mali at the end of the year. Oslo says the decision has been taken based on the security situation in the country. The Foreign Ministry refers to two military coups that took place in Mali in 2020 and 2021. “Closing the embassy in Bamako does not mean ending our engagement in the Sahel,” Norwegian Foreign Minister Anniken Huitfeldt said, adding: “There are major humanitarian needs in the Sahel, and Norway must remain a long-term and credible partner for the civilian population in Mali and the other countries of the Sahel.” The UN Security Council decided on the 30th June that the UN operation Minusma should be concluded before the end of the year. Denmark still has an embassy in Mali. /ritzau/
