Police to target vulnerable road users
Between September 25 and October 1, the police will be targeting vulnerable road users to make sure they are obeying the traffic rules, according to the Danish National Police in a press release on Sunday. The focus will primarily be on cyclists and moped riders, the release says. Frequent offences include cyclists who run a red light or who ride on pavements and pedestrian crossings. Among moped riders, it is the speed of illegal mopeds that poses a risk. They can often drive faster than the law allows. This poses a risk to both the driver and others in traffic, the Police communication says.
Christian Berthelsen, who is a police assistant in the National Police’s group communication, elaborated to Ritzau on the planned effort. “We will be doing a lot of physical checks out in the traffic, where we will look at whether cyclists, pedestrians and moped riders follow the traffic laws. We do this because we can see that there are a lot of people who are injured in traffic.”
” Almost 40 per cent of the road deaths in 2022 were vulnerable road users,” says Berthelsen. Figures from the Danish Road Directorate show that 28 pedestrians, 23 cyclists and 9 moped riders lost their lives in road accidents in 2022. In the same year, 407 pedestrians and 833 cyclists were injured in traffic. /ritzau/
