QatarEnergy, one of the world’s largest exporters of liquefied natural gas, has stopped sailing through the Red Sea. However, production of liquefied natural gas continues, a source with knowledge of the issue said on Monday. At least four tankers carrying liquefied natural gas were detained by QatarEnergy over the weekend after US and British forces carried out attacks on Houthi-controlled parts of Yemen. The attacks were in response to the Houthi movement’s attacks on ships in the Red Sea.
The three ships Al Ghariya, Al Huwaila and Al Nuaman had refuelled liquefied natural gas in Qatar and were due to cross the Suez Canal but stopped off the coast of Oman on January 14. Al Rekayyat, which was heading back towards Qatar, stopped along its route on January 13 in the Red Sea. “It is a break where we will try to get advice on whether it is safe to sail through the Red Sea. If it remains uncertain, we will sail via the Cape of Good Hope,” said a source with knowledge of the matter. /ritzau/
