Russia – UN Human Rights Council

Having been excluded from the UN Human Rights Council, Russia is now seeking to re-enter the council, according to the BBC, which is in possession of a Russian declaration of intent that is circulating between UN countries. In the statement, Russia, which in 2022 was voted out of the council following the invasion of Ukraine, is asking for support to re-enter. A vote is due to take place on October 10 on two seats on the council for Central and Eastern European countries. Here, Russia competes with Albania and Bulgaria for places. Diplomats, who did not give their names, told the BBC that Russia was trying to convince smaller countries to vote for Russia, with grain and arms deals. They said it was therefore not inconceivable that Russia would re-enter the council in a vote that could be seen as a “crucial test of Russia’s international reputation”, according to the BBC. /ritzau/
