September was the warmest in 149 years in Denmark
The month of September has set a new heat record with an average temperature of 16.3 degrees – the warmest since measurements began in 1874. The mean temperature is the average temperature in a given place in the country. The heat record just passes the previous heat record, which until this year has been shared between September 1999, 2006 and 2016. Those three years the mean temperature for September was 16.2 degrees.
The new heat record for September is primarily the result of a long period at the beginning of September, during which warm air from southern Europe flowed up over Denmark. From September 4th to September 12th, Denmark had nine days in a row a summer day with temperatures of 25 degrees. So many summer days in a row in September have not previously been seen in Danish weather history.
The average temperature for the three summer months combined ended at 16.1 degrees. Only June, with a mean temperature of 16.4 degrees, was warmer than September’s 16.3 degrees. Both July and August were colder than September./ritzau/
