Sierra Leone – rebellion

Thirteen soldiers were among a total of 20 people killed in Sierra Leone on Sunday when gunmen attacked some military barracks, a police station and a prison in Sierra Leone, an army spokesman told Reuters. Among the others killed are three alleged attackers, a civilian, a police officer and an employee of a private security company. Eight others were wounded and three arrested, the spokesman, Colonel Issa Bangura, said. The sound of gunfire resounded early Sunday morning through Sierra Leone’s capital, Freetown, where residents rushed to safety. The government said later that a group of “rebel soldiers” was behind the attacks. According to President Julius Maada Bio, most of the leaders behind the insurgency have been arrested. Sunday’s attack also resulted in 1890 inmates at a Freetown jail escaping. /ritzau/Reuters
