Swedish PM to discuss military assistance to the police
Sweden’s Prime Minister, Ulf Kristersson, said during an address to the nation on Thursday evening that Sweden is in “a difficult time” due to the recent serious violent crime in the country. “Sweden has never seen anything like it before, no other country in Europe has seen anything like it,” he said. He also said he would meet with National Police Chief Anders Thornberg and Commander Micael Bydén on Friday, SVT reported. Kristersson and the heads of authority will discuss how the Swedish military can help the police in their work against criminal gangs.
In Sweden, 11 people were shot dead in September. This is the highest number of gun violence deaths in Sweden in nearly four years. “We have to hunt down the gangs and we have to defeat the gangs. We must bring them to justice. If they are Swedish citizens, they must be severely punished. If they are foreign nationals, they must be deported,” Kristersson said. According to Kristersson, the country’s serious violent crime rate is the result of “political naivety, irresponsible immigration policy and failed integration”. Therefore, Sweden will make changes to immigration policy and introduce visitation zones and other measures./ritzau/TT
