Forty-seven people have died in landslides in Tanzania, according to local authorities on Sunday. In addition, 85 people have been injured. All victims live in the Manyara region of northern Tanzania. the authorities fear the death toll could rise further. The landslides that have hit the region have been caused by flooding as a result of unusually high amounts of rain. The floodwaters have destroyed roads and other infrastructure and have flooded entire villages in Tanzania and other East African countries. East Africa has otherwise experienced drought for longer than usual. But a few weeks ago, it was replaced by heavy rainfall and flooding. /ritzau/
