Thousands lined Copenhagen streets and squares Sunday

On Monday, Christiansborg’s Castle Square was snow-covered and relatively deserted. That was not the case on Sunday during the celebration of Denmark’s new King Frederik. Here, almost 300,000 Danes participated in the celebration of the new monarch, according to a statement from the telecommunications company 3. 3insights has collected anonymised mobility data from the mast positions located in the area around Christiansborg, Kongens Nytorv and Amalienborg. “By looking at anonymised mobility data, we can see how many people have been present during the celebration of the new king,” says Jeppe Waidtsløw, Head of Business Development. The figures are distributed in such a way that about 174,000 stood at Christiansborg, while 73,000 had found their way to Amalienborg Palace and another 52,000 were at Kongens Nytorv in downtown Copenhagen. 3 says that all data was collected between 14.00 and 15.00 at all three locations.
Apart from the many who braved the cold, an even larger number watched the day’s events on television. Across Denmark’s two major TV channels, DR and TV 2, just over three million watched on Sunday, according to DR Analysis on the basis of figures from the Nielsen Research Institute, which calculates viewer figures for flow TV and streaming. On DR, the coverage reached a total of 2.3 million viewers, while on TV 2 it reached just over 1.8 million, according to DR Analyse. The fact that there are not estimated to be 4.1 million people who watched TV in total, is due to the fact that some viewers have followed both channels. Therefore, the real number is 3.1 million, so double counting is avoided, DR explains.  /ritzau/
