Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is in close contact with the United Nations over the failed grain deal between Ukraine and Russia, Erdogan said Tuesday according to Turkish media. Erdogan is set to discuss the deal with UN Secretary-General António Guterres at the UN General Assembly later this month following his visit to President Vladimir Putin on Monday. Here they discussed the grain deal reached last summer between Ukraine and Russia. The agreement, which Turkey and the United Nations helped negotiate, ensured the export of grain via the Black Sea. However, the agreement fell through when Russia withdrew in July this year. Among other things, Russia is demanding that Russia’s state agricultural bank be allowed to use the Swift international payment system. The UN has partially opened the way for this to be made possible, Erdogan said. /ritzau/
