U.S. – Jim Jordan
Republican Jim Jordan failed to get enough support to be elected speaker of the House of Representatives in a vote Tuesday evening Danish time. Twenty of Jordan’s own party colleagues opposed the proposal to let him succeed Kevin McCarthy, who had to step down as chairman two weeks ago after a historic vote. Although Jordan failed in the first vote, he has another chance in another round of voting. His supporters in the party expect that, despite opposition from all Democrats, he will be elected sooner or later. Jordan belongs to the Republican right wing and has the backing of, among others, former President Donald Trump. Since Kevin McCarthy’s departure two weeks ago, the House of Representatives has been without a speaker and is thus paralysed. /ritzau/
