U.S./Russia

The Pentagon Thursday issued a statement saying there is no indication that it was a surface-to-air missile that shot down the Russian plane. Senior U.S. officials told Reuters earlier on Thursday that it was likely a surface-to-air missile fired within Russia’s borders that shot down the plane where Yevgeny Prigozhin was supposed to be on board. The officials, who wished to remain anonymous, stressed that these assessments were preliminary and reserved. Russian aviation authorities have said Prigozhin, his right-hand man Dmitry Utkin and eight others were on board a private plane that crashed. There were no survivors. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Thursday that his country had nothing to do with Yevgeny Prigozhin’s presumed death. “We had nothing to do with it. Everyone can see who is dealing with it,” Zelenskyy told reporters. /ritzau/AFP
