President Joe Biden promises that he will not abandon Ukraine even though Congress has passed a temporary extension of the U.S. budget in which economic and military aid to Ukraine has been omitted. “I want to assure our American allies, the people of America and the people of Ukraine that you can count on our support. We will not turn our backs on it,” he said in a statement from the White House. At a press conference, he was asked if he has confidence in Republican Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy. And here he replied that his Democratic Party has reached an agreement with McCarthy for continued support for Ukraine. “We’ve just concluded one on Ukraine, so we’ll figure it out,” he said. It is unclear what that agreement is. Democratic lawmakers in Congress were strongly unhappy that support for Ukraine was not included in the 45-day budget extension reached overnight Sunday. /ritzau/AFP
