Zimbabwe’s president, 80-year-old Emmerson Mnangagwa, has secured 52.6 percent of the vote in elections that took place last week according to the election commission, Reuters has reported while DPA reports that according to preliminary results, the ruling Zanu-PF party has also secured a majority in Parliament. Mnangagwa took over for Robert Mugabe after a military coup in 2018. He was expected to secure re-election. His main challenger, Nelson Chamis, who heads the Citizens’ Coalition for Change (CCC) party, won 44 percent of the vote, the electoral commission said.
