Suspect in alleged assassination attempt lacked direct line of sight to Trump

A 58-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of an assassination attempt against Donald Trump at a golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida, but did not have a direct line of sight to the former president, according to Secret Service acting chief Ronald Rowe Jr. When Secret Service agents detected the man with a rifle on the opposite side of the course’s fence, an agent immediately drew their weapon and fired. The individual, without firing any shots at the agents, fled the scene. Investigations by the FBI are underway, reviewing surveillance footage from the area. An earlier tip in 2019 indicated the suspect, Ryan Routh, had illegal possession of a weapon and had a criminal history including fleeing from a crash and resisting arrest. Trump’s visit was unannounced, and the Secret Service chief stated, based on current information, there’s no indication Routh knew of Trump’s presence on the course.
