Former Peruvian president Fujimori Dies at 86

Alberto Fujimori, who served as the president of Peru from 1990 to 2000, has passed away at the age of 86 after a long battle with cancer. His daughter Keiko Fujimori and his other children announced the news. Fujimori, the son of Japanese immigrants, was initially elected as the rector of a small university before becoming president. He was recognized for his decisive approach to politics, fighting high inflation, and privatizing state companies, which helped stabilize Peru’s economy. He also captured the founder of the Shining Path insurgent group, Abimael Guzman. However, Fujimori faced criticism for autocratic tendencies, including shutting down Congress in 1992 and adjusting the constitution to suit his preferences. His presidency was marred by corruption scandals, and after fleeing to Japan and later returning to Peru, he was arrested in Chile, extradited to Peru in 2007, and sentenced to 25 years in prison in 2009 for corruption and human rights violations.
