Electric company accused of misleading free power claims
The Danish Consumer Ombudsman has assessed that Modstrøm electric company misled customers with claims of ‘free electricity at night.’ The company marketed the supposed free electricity, but customers still had to pay network and system services fees, which are not considered unavoidable costs. Complaints by a number of customers about Modstrøm’s marketing tactics led to this scrutiny. Moreover, the company is also accused of unjustly changing the price on their customer’s electricity contracts in February 2022, which the ombudsman deemed the terms for unlawful and therefore invalid. This is not the first instance of Modstrøm facing regulatory attention; they were also reprimanded in a previous case for misleading conduct in 2019.
