Ship carrying chemicals heads to Danish waters
A cargo ship carrying 20,000 tons of ammonium nitrate is heading towards Danish waters, confirmed by the Danish Maritime Authority. The vessel intended to dock in Lithuania for repairs but was rejected due to its hazardous cargo, previously also rejected by Norway. Ammonium nitrate is used in explosives and fertilizers. The Danish authorities will closely monitor the ship’s passage through their waters. The ship was loaded with this explosive material in the Russian port of Kandalaksha and sails under the Maltese flag, making Malta responsible for the safe passage. According to registries, the ship is Syrian-owned through a Lebanese company. It sustained damage at the end of August and was detained, then rejected in Tromsø, Norway. It is now accompanied by a Dutch tugboat and a Norwegian patrol vessel.
