Venezuela arrests American suspected in Maduro assassination plot

Venezuela detained a U.S. citizen suspected of planning to assassinate President Nicolas Maduro, as reported by AFP. This individual is the fourth American to be arrested in the country recently. Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello announced in parliament that the American was captured in the capital, Caracas, after photographing cables, oil facilities, and military installations as part of a plot against the country. Besides the Americans, two Spaniards and a Czech have also been arrested, with their home countries demanding information and condemning the arrests. President Maduro claims all detainees have confessed. Maduro, announced as the election winner with 51% of votes by Venezuelan authorities, faces international disapproval and claims by the U.S. of extensive evidence supporting opposition candidate Edmundo González Urrutia’s victory. EU’s Foreign Chief Josep Borrell labeled Maduro’s government as dictatorial.
