New guideline for ADHD treatment

The Medicine Council is releasing a new guideline for ADHD medication aiming to standardize treatment across Denmark. There are currently significant regional differences in ADHD treatment, which the guideline seeks to address, especially as the number of ADHD patients has surged, according to the council’s chairperson, Jørgen Schøler Kristensen. The consumption of ADHD medication has also increased sharply since the last guidelines from 2016. Now, around 2% of the population, which is 110,000 people, are being treated for ADHD in 2023. The updated guidelines, proposed by the Danish Psychiatric Society and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Society, are expected to ensure uniform, high-quality treatment throughout the country. The Medicine Council estimates that the new guidance for the prescribing of subsidized medications by general practitioners will be ready by the end of 2025.
