Austria drops objection to methane-reducing feed

Austria has withdrawn its objection to the EU approval of Danish state aid for methane-reducing feed additives, announced by the Danish Agriculture Agency. This move will allow the implementation of a support scheme, which is part of the funds allocated by the Green Fund earlier in the year, aimed to help Denmark achieve its 2025 climate target. By adding the supplement to cow feed, methane production in digestion is reduced, and farmers can receive financial support from the new year. Austria’s initial complaint was about potential illegal state aid affecting competition in the European market. Livestock farming contributes significantly to climate impact, with Danish cattle emitting an estimated 3.2 million tons of CO2 annually. The additive is considered critical to meeting the climate goals for 2025 and 2030, aiming for an average eight percent reduction in cow digestion methane by 2025.
