Maersk violated own rules by shipping via Russia
Maersk acknowledges transporting goods through Russia’s railways, which contradicts their internal ban. The Danish company shipped two containers of milk powder from Kazakhstan to China via northern Russia. The transport was facilitated by Shanghai Tieyang Multi-Model Transportation Co. Ltd. (TMT), in which Maersk owns approximately a third. Chief compliance officer Alexandra Belmonte admits a serious mistake due to lack of space on the direct route and assures measures to prevent recurrence. Transport via Russian railways is not sanctioned internationally, thus there’s no breach of international sanctions but of Maersk’s own policies. The shipping method has faced criticism for potentially aiding the Russian economy and war financing in Ukraine.
