Municipality Assigns Landslide Blame to Nordic Waste

Randers Municipality holds Nordic Waste accountable for a landslide, stating the company is responsible for complying with environmental permit requirements. This stance comes after a critique from professor emerita Ellen Margrethe Basse highlighting the municipality’s omission of a soil quantity limit at Nordic Waste’s facility and lack of clear regulations regarding waterborne pollutant discharges. Municipal director Jesper Kaas Schmidt indicated that past supervision has been evaluated, but the company remains liable for safe operations. Nordic Waste reported a considerable landslide in December 2023, risking pollution of Alling Å and Randers Fjord. Amidst bankruptcy proceedings, the question of responsibility and financial liability for cleanup efforts remains unanswered.
