EU electric car sales fall
Electric vehicle sales in the EU are declining, with a 44% drop in August compared to the previous year and an 8.3% decrease overall for 2024. This decline is pronounced in Germany and France, contrasting Denmark’s 48% sales increase. Mads Rørvig of Mobility Denmark finds the trend alarming, linking it to the premature removal of purchase incentives. Germany had removed EV subsidies last year after dispensing 75 billion kroner to support 2.1 million EV buyers. A new plan is being drafted, targeting corporate buyers, in response to the struggling German auto industry. Thomas Møller Sørensen from DI Bilbranchen highlights the success of Northern Europe in transitioning to green vehicles, thanks to continuous support and stable charging infrastructure policies. He predicts a recovery in EU’s EV sales once prices drop or subsidies are introduced, primarily to aid countries with lower buying power.
