Danish film ‘The Girl with the Needle’ eyes oscar

‘The Girl with the Needle’ directed by Magnus von Horn is Denmark’s Oscar pick in the Best International Film category, per the Danish Film Institute. Although not final, the Oscar Committee chaired by Jacob Neiiendam selected it for its strong nomination potential. Starring Vic Carmen Sonne and Trine Dyrholm, the film unfolds in Copenhagen after WWI, focusing on Karoline, a woman facing unemployment, pregnancy, and desertion. In her struggle, Karoline encounters Dagmar, who runs a covert adoption agency. Neiiendam finds the black-and-white film both accessible and artistically valuable, with relevant themes like women’s societal roles and abortion rights. Inspired by the true story of Dagmar Overbye, a murderer of nine infants, the film will premiere in Denmark on January 23 and previously competed at Cannes Film Festival.
