Køge Bugt to join new marine national park

Environment Minister Magnus Heunicke announced plans to include Køge Bugt in a new marine national park, broadening the initial scope from just the northern Øresund. The parks are intended to improve the marine environment, despite known raw material zones in Køge Bugt. Local efforts by Køge Bugt Alliance, as reported by Greve’s Mayor Pernille Beckmann to DR, stress the urgent need to alleviate dwindling oxygen levels, pollution, and marine life suffering. The decision follows a 2022 finance law agreement to create two marine national parks, with Øresund and Lillebælt chosen, funded with ten million kroner annually for research and nature promotion until 2025. The parks aim to allow nature to evolve naturally with minimal human interference, protecting areas from disturbances like sludge dumping and wastewater discharge. Political parties will convene on Friday to discuss the park plans.
