Copenhagen closer to ‘Palestine Square’
A majority in Copenhagen’s Technical and Environmental Committee has voted for a Copenhagen area to be named Palestine Square. However, the path to a final decision is still long. Helle Bonnesen of the Conservative People’s Party, who voted against, has exercised her right to stop the decision from being immediately implemented. The proposal will now be presented to the City Council on October 3. Despite appearing to have a majority there, a public consultation is required before the name change takes place. Proposed by four political parties — the Red-Green Alliance, the Socialist People’s Party, the Social Liberal Party, and the Alternative — the initiative faces opposition as symbol politics amid a global conflict. On the other hand, proponents argue the name change is a way to ensure all citizens in Copenhagen feel acknowledged and part of the community.
