Court declines case on telecom data storage

The European Court of Human Rights has refused to hear a case on the mandatory storage of teledata by telecom companies, ending the legal process without further avenues for appeal. The Association Against Illegal Logging alleged that Danish rules on teledata registration were invalid, but the Danish Supreme Court had previously found in favor of the state. Rasmus Malver, spearheading the case, lamented the outcome and the lack of funds for a renewed effort after spending 3.2 million kroner. Despite EU Court rulings against such practices, Danish companies have been logging customer teledata for years. A new law in 2022 largely upholds previous regulations, sparking concerns about its legality with the Danish Justice Ministry itself recognizing a high risk of non-compliance with EU law.
